MADINGLEY

Another rose that I would to have but there is little chance of me doing so, is the freshly named Colin Dickson privately named rose, Lord Browne of Madingley. A floribunda rose, it was named by a friend of Lord Browne to celebrate his 75th birthday. His Lordship, Edward John Philip Browne was born on February 28th, 1948, had taken the title of Baron Browne in 2001 having previously been knighted by Queen Elizabeth the Second in 1998' He was a British Businessman, who had spent all his working life with British Petroleum and was the son of a British Army Officer.

The village of Madingley, which is just south of Cambridge, is famous for its Hall, which is today is owned and used by the University, its windmill that started life at Ellington and the American Cemetery.

Madingley Hall dates from 1543 having been built for Sir John Hynde. A later member of the Hynde family was responsible for in about 1606 having one of the two parish churches at Histon, St Etheldreda, demolished so that he could use the materials to extend the Hall, Today their is a stained glass window in Madingley Hall showing him stealing St Etheldreda's.

The current windmill, which started life at Ellington near Huntingdon, is a postmill which Ambrose Harding had the Histon joiner and carpenter, Jordan Ison, move to Madingley Hill for him in 1936. Harding then being the owner of Madingley Hall. The windmill dates from the early 19th century.

The Original Windmill

The early mill, which is also a postmill, had fallen down in 1909 and is much older the current one, having been built about 1787.

The American Cemetery is a Second World War Memorial and contains 3,811 American War Dead on its 30.5 acre site. It was dedicated in 1956.

I must say thank you to Colin Dickson for providing me with the details and the photograph of this rose.
