SUMMER IS AROUND THE CORNER

One of the signs that summer is not far away is when our tulips start to appear around the garden and that is no exception in our garden in which we have many in pots including my favourite 'hand painted' ones.

Type 1 - Single Early

This single tulips normally burst into flower from Mid April.

Black Prince - has deep-purple flowers with a blackish purple inner which flower. It grows to about 35cm tall.

Candy Prince- an early singe tulip with lilac flowers, Candy Prince flowers normally in grow to about 35cm tall

Diana - has cream coloured flowers with a slight green sheen and grows to about 25cm tall.

Flair - a real beauty with its golden yellow flowers that have ruby red flairs and grows to about 35cm tall.

Merry Christmas - has scarlet red flowers and grows to about 40cm tall,

Purple Prince - grow to 38cm tall and mallow-purple flowers with dull lilac flames.

Sunny Prince - have soft yellow flowers and grow to about 35cm tall.


Type 2 - Early Double

Early Double tulips have stems with fully double flowers.

The Edge - grows to about 35cm tall and has cream flowers with green flairs.

William van Oranje - has flamboyant orange flowers and grows to about 30cm tall.


Type 3 - Triumph

Triumph tulips have single cup shaped blooms that withstand both the wind and the rain.

Cape Town - grows to about 45cm tall and has bright yellow with bright red edges.

Couleur Cardinal - has deep scarlet flowers and grows to between 30 and 40cm tall.

Just Kissed - flowers in April/May and has mottled pink with darker pink flowers. It grows to about 50cm.

Muvata - has deep wine red flowers and flowers in early April. It grows to about 50cm tall.

Ronaldo - grows to about 50cm tall and has rich shades of dark reddish purple.


Type 4 - Darwin

Darwin tulips flower in Late April and May.

Golden Apeldoorn - have large golden yellow flowers with occasional specks of red.


Type 5 - Single Late

Single late tulips have very strong stems with large flowers that hold well in the wind.

Queen of the Night - has deep mauve flowers that are almost black. It grows to 60cm & flowers late April/May.


Type 6 - Lily

First introduced in 1914, the Lily-Flowering tulips have flowers that we open resemble a lily.

Claudia - have soft purple flowers with white edges and flower in Early to Mid May.


Type 7 - Fringed

These tulips add something different to your garden with their fringed petals. They flower in May.

Canasta - normally flowers in May and has pinkish-red and white flowers. It grows to about 40cm tall.


Type 8 - Virdiflora

Virdiflora is Italian for green and all these tulips have flowers that green streaks.


Type 9 - Rembrandt

Named after the famous Dutch, artist, Rembrandt, as the flames on the Rembrandt tulips are like those of the artist's brush.

Washington - is one of my favourite tulips with its yellow rose and 'hand painted' red brush maks.


Type 10 - Parrot Tulips

Parrot tulips have wavy, twisted and deeply frilled petals.

Dark Parrot

Texas Flame - has yellow flowers with bright red flames. It grows to 45cm and flowers from March to May.


Type 11 Poeny or Late Double Tulips

These late flowering tulips, which using flower in April and May, clearly resemble paeonies.

Carnaval de Nice - grows to about 50cm tall and has sparkling double white flowers with deep red feathering.

Mount Tacoma - has large double flowers and grows to about 45cm tall.

Tabledance - has purple and pink flowers and grows to about 40cm tall.


Type 12 - Fosteriana

Fosteriana tulips normally flower in March and April

Purrissima - is also known as 'White Emperor' has very large milky white flowers. They grow to about 18cm.


Type 13 - Species Tulips

Species tulips are smaller tulips that are ideal for rock gardens.

Tarda - was first cultivated in 1590 and has white petalled flowers with yellow trumpets. it grows to about 15cm.


Type 14 - Kaufmanniana

Kaufmanniana tulips are normally the first tulips to flower in your garden, flowering in March, and have very broad leaves.

Johann Strauss - flower in March and have flowers with cream centres and red flushed exterior. 20cm tall.

Stresa - has current red flowers that are edged with yellow and grows to about 25cm tall.


Type 15 - Greigii

Often referred to as 'Peacocks' due to their leaves, Greigii tulips normally flower in March and April.

Pinoccho - has bright scarlet flowers with creamy edges.

Red Riding Hood- has orange-red flowers that are edged with yellow and have a black base.
